Break-through in preventive forest monitoring
GoodWood is a near real-time forest monitoring system, using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from Sentinel-1, to detect illegal logging to preserve the rainforests.
Today forest monitoring systems are based on optical satellites. However they are drastically hampered by perennial clouds, haze and smoke, and non-visibility during nighttime. Furthermore the lengthy rain fall period of up to 9 months limit the observation of the rain forest.
GoodWood overcomes these limitations through the use and processing of Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images with continuous observations at day and night, and, more significant, at any weather condition, also during the rain fall period.
